NORTH FORK HOUSE
Located on the North Fork of Long Island, this green-field site looks out across the Sound towards Connecticut. A long driveway through the 20 acre property winds through old growth trees to reach a clearing, on the edge of which sits this unique house.
The overall massing is composed of four wings or pavilions, linked at the center by a single story volume in a cruciform configuration. Upon arrival the wings appear to be almost independent, but later reveal themselves to be part of a unified composition. This allows for most of the accommodation to be housed on the First Floor including three bedrooms, with two more bedrooms on the Second Floor. A partial basement provides additional family spaces and utility rooms.
Each wing has a pitched roof over-sailing a continuous exterior walkway around the First Floor. This covered walkway, or “engawa”, represents a filter/transitional space between the inside and outside.
On the Western elevation, two of the roofs connect to create a generous curved canopy sheltering a patio area between the living room in one wing and the kitchen in the next.
Materials are used to define key elements. Concrete for the basement, engawa and most of the First Floor level, with wide plank wood flooring in bedrooms. Minimal aluminum framed glazing to maximize transparency and daylight, and corrugated stainless steel cladding for solid walls around the engawa.
Above the glazing line, each pavilion is clad in unfinished vertical wood siding and standing-seam zinc roofing. The interior juxtaposes single story spaces and double height volumes, with four large skylights demarcating the center of the house.
